Sperm Extraction

Medical advancements have introduced several sperm extraction techniques that offer hope to those experiencing male infertility. These methods are particularly beneficial when used in conjunction with assisted reproductive technologies like IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). Here's an overview of the most common sperm extraction options available to you at Ochsner LSU Health.

Micro-TESE is a surgical procedure performed under a microscope to find and extract viable sperm directly from the testicular tissue. This method significantly increases the chances of retrieving sperm by allowing the surgeon to closely examine the tubules for the presence of sperm.

TESA is a minimally invasive procedure where a needle is inserted into the testicle, and sperm is aspirated directly from the tissue.

TESE involves the direct removal of a small portion of testicular tissue through a small incision in the testis. The tissue is then processed in a laboratory to extract viable sperm.

MESA is a precise procedure performed under a microscope to extract sperm from the epididymis, a tube at the back of the testicle that stores sperm. This method is typically used for men with a blockage in the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the urethra).

PESA does not require a surgical incision. Instead, a fine needle is passed directly into the epididymis through the scrotal skin to acquire sperm. This procedure can be done quickly with minimal discomfort.
